Modern Wedding Songs

by Mike on October 21, 2009

Here at SongBuilders, we’ve been doing a bit of research recently into modern wedding songs, taking a look at some of the more popular songs that couples are deciding on for the bridal entrance, the first dance, the last dance, and so on.

It’s always quite interesting to look at this kind of stuff. Mendelsohn’s ubiquitous Wedding March is still the most popular tune chosen for the bridal entrance. Now this is definitely NOT a “modern wedding song”, but plenty of modern couples still seem to like it. Another popular choice is the Irish singer Enya. Her floaty vocals are often to be heard echoing around the church as the bride walks down the aisle.

For the ceremony itself, most couples tend to choose more traditional music rather than something modern. Of course, any songs that you are planning to have played during the actual ceremony need to be cleared first with the registrar, priest, or whoever else is officiating over the wedding. So ACDC’s “Highway to Hell” for example, would probably not be given the green light!

Moving on to the first dance song, I was quite surprised to discover that one of the most popular first dance songs these days is Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”. Given that this song is all about a breakup, it’s not one I would personally choose for the first dance with my new wife, but I guess it just goes to show how many people don’t actually listen to the lyrics of a song, instead just latching on to the chorus (ah, the power of a good hook!).

Of course, our view is that the best modern day wedding song is the one you have custom written, just for you. Here at SongBuilders, we can compose your bridal entrance music, an appropriate song for the ceremony and a beautiful love song for your first dance, with lyrics that are written specifically with you in mind.
